COP28: WWF and MONRE strengthen partnership in biodiversity conservation, climate actions and sustainable development, toward Net Zero

COP28 Dubai on December 4, 2023 - Mr Dang Quoc Khanh, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Viet Nam, held a bilateral meeting with WWF leaders to discuss the strategic direction of collaboration in biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, sustainable development and the prioritization of finance mobilizations for nature-based solutions.
The representatives of WWF include Ms Tanya Steele - CEO, WWF-UK; Ms Marcene Mitchell - Senior Vice President for Climate Change, WWF-US; Mr Ajs Dam - Senior Director for Corporate Partnerships, WWF-Denmark; and Mr Van Ngoc Thinh, CEO WWF-Viet Nam.

Minister Dang Quoc Khanh highly values WWF's support during COP28 and acknowledges the fruitful collaboration between MONRE and WWF in recent times. The Minister also requested continued coordination and assistance from WWF to Viet Nam and MONRE in developing a green economy, promoting circular economic practices, expanding biodiversity corridors and natural reserves, ensuring a fair transition to renewable energy, and mobilizing international resources, especially from the United Kingdom, Denmark and the United States.

WWF welcomes Viet Nam's commitments at COP28 to transition to a green and sustainable economy. Viet Nam stands as a regional and global exemplar in climate action, aiming for a full recovery for natureal by 2050. 

"We admire the effort of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as Viet Nam's government as a whole in fulfilling biodiversity commitments. Viet Nam, with its high biodiversity, is a top priority for the WWF-Network in addressing biodiversity-related challenges”, Ms Tanya Steele - CEO of WWF-UK, told  the meeting.

Ms. Marcene Mitchell - Senior Vice President for Climate Change, WWF-US, said: "WWF prioritizes Viet Nam and is currently crafting the NBS Origination Platform program for Central Viet Nam. We are grateful for the support of the Ministry for GEF8 as part of the NBS program. Alongside this, we have secured commitments from esteemed sponsors such as Velux, Apple, International Paper, and Cisco. We anticipate the swift signing of the Letter of Intent (LOI) based on our collective consensus."

"For two decades, we've stood by WWF-Viet Nam, fostering biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, sustainable development, and climate and energy initiatives. The VELUX project now actively works to elevate forest carbon stocks, biodiversity, and community well-being in the Central Annamites Landscape. In collaboration with WWF-US, we committed to assisting WWF-Viet Nam in crafting a 20-year strategy with the Vietnamese government, working towards our collective sustainable future", Ajs Dam - Senior Director for Corporate Partnerships, WWF-Denmark committed.
